DEED Scholarship

College students may earn money, credit and experience with a DEED scholarship. These scholarships are offered to support energy-related work, education, and research and to introduce students to career opportunities in public power.

Educational Scholarships provide funding to support the education of students working toward technical careers that are in short supply and high demand by electric utilities. A DEED member utility must sponsor your application. Review the Educational Scholarship Requirements here. $2,000 per scholarship is paid directly to student’s university. Deadline: February 15 and October 15 each year.

A few different types of scholarships are available for those interested in doing energy-related research. Ten $4,000 Student Research Grants/Internships and One $5,000 Technical Design Project are awarded each year.

Here is a list of the scholarship application questions for the Student Research Grants/Internships. To apply for the Student Research Grant/Internship, the student must have a DEED member utility sponsor/mentor. Please review the list of DEED member utilities to find a close potential sponsor/mentor. We will provide contact information for up to three utilities the student wishes to contact regarding sponsorship. Deadline: February 15 and October 15 each year.

A Technical Design Project does not require a utility sponsor. This grant is particularly suited to engineering students working on their senior project. Non-engineering students may apply, but it should be a technical project. Up to $3,000 in travel reimbursement is also included so the TDP student(s) may present their research at APPA’s Engineering and Operations Technical Conference in March 2022.

Recipients of a DEED student research grant/internship must adhere to the requirements. A mid-project report, final report, and abstract are required.

Students who are interested in applying for a scholarship should send an email with their contact information, date of graduation, and the name of the DEED member utility you wish to contact to sponsor your scholarship to DEED@publicpower.org to be given credentials to access the web-based application system.
