Graduate students win best paper awards at IEEE COMPEL

Electric aircraft startup doubles down on Chicago

A Seattle-based electric airplane startup unveiled more details about its launch Thursday, and announced plans to continue growing its Chicagoland presence.

Zunum Aero, a startup that’s building hybrid-to-electric aircraft designed to take passengers from regional airports with a range of up to 700 miles, said it plans to begin testing flights in 2019 and make flights available to passengers in 2022.

Enver Candan, Christopher Brandon Barth, Andrew R Stillwell, and Thomas Peter Foulkes, all ECE ILLINOIS graduate students advised by Assistant Professor Robert Pilawa-Podgurski, won best presentation awards at the 2017 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC). Both Foulkes and Prof. Pilawa-Podgurski are CSL affiliates. Pilawa-Podgruski is also a Helm Fellow in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Read More
